Round-by-Round Report

Semi-Finals (2 April 2023)

Galway’s Ciana NíChurraoin and Niamh Heffernan defeated Tyrone’s Eilise McCrory and Aoife Kelly, winning the first game 21-11 and the second game 21-6. Tyrone took an early lead going 10-1 up in the first game [11:35 into video Reference 2], Galway taking time to settle into the match before taking 20 of the next 21 points to win the first game and then taking the second game comfortably. [Reference 2]

In the second Semi-Final Cork’s Catríona Casey and Aisling O’Keeffe raced into an early 6-0 lead in the first game versus Roscommon’s Fiona Tully and Siobhán Treacy before Fiona Tully’s killshot got Roscommon on the board [6:35 to 6:45 in Video Reference 3]. Cork took the next 10 shots [12:00 in VR-3], but despite Roscommon taking four shots in a row to bring the score back to 16-5 [14:15 in VR-3], the comeback stalled and Cork won out 21-7 in the first game. Jedburgh Ba Game AD 1548-Present

Report

Jedburgh in the South of Scotland Borders region is one of a few towns where the Ba Game – a Street Handball Game – is played every February on the Thursday after Fastern Eve. There are no limits to the number of players on either of the two teams, which consist of those living North of Mercat Cross and those living South of Mercat Cross in the town.

The aim of the game is to guide a small leather ball – the size of a Gaelic Handball – to one of two “goals” situated at either end of the town. Injuries are common and shopkeepers board up windows in order to prevent damage. The tradition has been played since AD 1548 with the first verified record dating to 1704 according to BBC News Scotland.

The Leather Ball has ribbons attached to it, something which is common across Britain and Ireland in ancient custom, such as the ribbons put on trees in Ireland on St. Brigids Day. Those North of the Mercat Cross – the “Uppies” – try to take the ball to the Town Castle and those South of the Mercat Cross – the “Doonies” – try to take it to the Jedwater.

About Basque Pelota

Pelota is the Traditional Game of the Basque People of Sourthwest France and North Central Iberia (Spain). Their language is the oldest in Europe, and the only non-Indo-European language left in Western Europe according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and therefore with some justification the Basques refere to themselves as the only Native Europeans. The sport is similar to the GAA and European game of Handball, played with a curved glove which is used to propel the ball off one of two perpendicluar walls on a four-sided court, with the other two sides open.

Report

Manon Scheepstra of Huizum won her fourth “Queenship” title in Frisian Kaatsen (Handball) in 2019 with 65 points from 15 first , 9 seconds and 2 thirds, 8 points ahead of second placed Ilse Tuinenga of Franeker. Imke van der Leest of Easterein came third on 46 points.

About

Kaatsen is a Frisian version of Handball that was first codified in 1853 by the Franeker de P.C. oprichten (Permanente Commissie). On 7 June 1897 it became part of the Nederlands Kaats Bond and then in 1934 became independent again as the CFK, de Christelijke Friese Kaatsbond. In 1994 it again merged with thE KNKB. It is Primarily played in Franeker in Friesland.

From the KNKB Website:

By bouncing (Kaatsen) is meant:
Two teams that fight each other by passing the ball to each other. This involves a storage party (service) and a returning party. In the scoring, 4 winning strokes yield a first / game (game) and in addition to direct winning strokes, there are undecided strokes (bounce = wooden marker), which later yield points after switching functions.

Frisian handball originated in the 12th century in cloisters in France and therefore found its way north via Belgium.
Bounce was first played on squares throughout the Netherlands by the ‘hegerein’ (well-to-do), only later on grass. When the nobles withdrew more to the tennis courts with their game, handball became a game for ‘the common people’.”
